We welcome the newest member of the CULT Coffee Roaster family, Lonnie Schatz! Lonnie is our Director of Sales and he is uniquely qualified to take over this position with a strong sales, marketing and food industry experience! Here’s a little more about Lonnie!
Tell us about your background Lonnie:
My foundational roots are in the restaurant business, I worked in a high paced restaurant starting at the age of 15 with family members and loved it. After I left college I moved to Alaska were I fell into, at the time a small start up coffee roasting company, with the son of the Bigelow Tea family. I worked all positions there from roasting to serving as a Barista. Today it is a thriving company with locations all over Alaska.
Most recently I have been in the mortgage business for 24 years my background were in Sales with my role in this industry having worn many hats from direct sales to individuals to marketing and selling services to large real-estate firms to some of the largest national home builders. I have most recently held the position of Sales Manager for the largest bank in America, Wells Fargo. This position required me as well as my team to hit various production goals and volume in sales growth. I was awarded a Service Star Award this year for excellence in service in this industry, this is a honored award that only a few people in this industry are given every year. When the mortgage crash happened in 2008 I took a two year break from the mortgage industry and attended Le Cordon Bleu, college for culinary arts, and completed earning an Associates Degree graduating second in my class with top honors.
I know that with my long history in direct sales and my love as a foodie together with my designation as an Executive Chef will all play a part in my abilities to not only help grow our business and to help raise awareness to our culture and craft products but will help establish our company as a known brand and a earned level of respect in our market.
What are you most looking forward to at CULT?
I am looking forward to becoming a vital part of the family here at CULT, there is a real family atmosphere here and you can see the pride everyone has in their work that they do. I look forward to making my contributions to the team as I help elevate our brand and culture to the market place. I believe that this really will be a career here, not a job, where every day is more exciting as the day before. I want to make my family here at CULT very proud of the work that I do and for them to see the value that I will bring to the table.
What is the most challenging part of your job? Why are you excited to embrace the challenge?
I believe that the most challenging part of my job is ramping up as a “coffee foodie.” In the never ending world of coffee education that is forever growing as the world taste grows along with it, I have made a commitment in learning everything I can and work hard on always continuing my education in the coffee world so I can be a trusted partner for my CULT family and bring value to the industry.
I have been given an incredible opportunity to represent CULT coffee out in the industry. I know I posses the background for creating rewarding relationships with our coffee partners. I also have a passion for the food industry in all forms. This passion is the driving force that gets me out of bed in the morning as I go forward into the market to develop new relationships and partners in our growing family. I believe in what we have to offer and know the our quality and commitment to the market is the best out there.
What makes CULT different than other roasters in your mind?
I would say that there commitment to the quality of their product, unlike a large mass roaster where the motto is to buy large, buy cheap and price low to price out other roasters. CULT is a craft roaster that is committed to producing a high end product and being responsible to the sources of their products as well as their responsibility to the community as they serve and build upon the culture of their incredible product.
